Pits and Perverts
My dear friend Jonathan is being played by Dominic West in the new film Pride. We used to work together in the men's tailoring department of English National Opera. Our cutter was Roxie who is one of my tailors interviewed on pages 11 & 12 in It's Not the Job, It's the Cabbage: The Lives of Tailors
The film opens in London on 12th September and features some old favourites like Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton
And do watch this film made in 1987 about the real events, featuring Jonathan as a young, handsome fund raiser and his partner Nigel compering their fund raiser with Bronski Beat (who apparently played at the party for the press opening last night)
"The South Wales miners' strike of 1984-1985 saw the formation of a curious alliance between a plucky group of young homosexuals from London and miners in Dulais Valley. In Dancing in Dulais, an initial wariness on the part of the young gays, the miners, and the miners' families gives way, through sometimes delicate interactions, to a loving and purposeful solidarity.
