The Batavia, a ship of the Dutch East India Company wrecked on a remote island off the coast of Western Australia in 1629. What followed was a grisly tale of murder and cruelty as Jeronimus Cornelisz exerted his control over the survivors.
These panels are inspired by Dutch Golden Age portraits and still lifes, often known as Vanitas, reminders of the fragility of life. They are made in a raised form like stumpwork, a form of embroidery popular at that time for depicting moralistic stories.
